Vermont man caught 'red handed' with potBENNINGTON, Vermont -- Samuel J. Maduro, already facing two separate felony trials on charges of selling cocaine and sexual assault on a minor, was arrested in Killington, Vermont last week and charged with carrying close to a pound of pot.
A Rutland judge imposed $75,000 bail, and Maduro was held at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility in Rutland, Vermont on Friday, according to court records.
Maduro, 47, has already faced a jury twice at Vermont District Court in Bennington on the cocaine charges. The first trial in 2000 resulted in a hung jury, but the second time around, in 2001, Maduro was convicted and he was sentenced to serve 25 to 40 years in jail.
Maduro won at least a temporary reprieve on the cocaine conviction early this year when the Vermont Supreme Court reversed the conviction because of irregularities in the trial. He must now face a jury a third time on the cocaine charges.
After the Supreme Court made the reversal, the Bennington County State's Attorney's office reinstated the charge of sexual assault on a minor, which had been dropped. He is also going to be tried for that charge, based on allegations by police that Maduro had sex with a 14-year-old Bennington girl whom he was using to help him sell crack cocaine while he was on house arrest in Bennington, Vermont.
Maduro was out on bail when Rutland police busted him, allegedly finding 13.5 ounces of marijuana in a warrant search of his apartment in Killington, Vermont.
Maduro told police "you caught me red-handed," according to a Vermont police affidavit.
