Heroin task force nabs six suspected of drug trafficking in Vermont

SPRINGFIELD, Vermont -- With help from a recently established task force, Vermont State Police arrested six people Thursday suspected of involvement in an area drug trafficking ring.

The Heroin Enforcement Action Team arrested Tausha McAllister, 22, for the sale of narcotics; Joseph Jacob, 22, for aiding in the commission of a felony; Vincent Murphy, 32, for three counts of sale of heroin; Donna Perham, 51, for sale of narcotics; and William Orvis, 44, for the sale of heroin.

All of the suspects were arrested in Springfield, Vermont with the exception of Orvis, who was found in Bellows Falls, according to team supervisor John Merrigan.

"The defendants all worked together at one time or another during their distribution efforts," Merrigan said.

The arrests stem from a nearly two-year investigation by police that has been intensifying recently with the efforts of the team, which was formed last August.

"The nuts and bolts of this case have unfolded over the last three months," Merrigan said.

The team seized significant amounts of heroin and prescription drugs, namely opiate derivatives, from the suspects, Merrigan said.

Vermont police are still waiting to arrest James Murphy, 31, who Merrigan said was driving from Florida to turn himself in. A seventh suspect, Gerald Wing, 51, hasn't been located yet, but is thought to be in the Springfield, Vermont area, Merrigan said.

The team used informants and controlled buys during the investigation, which was based primarily on sales, he said.

Merrigan said he hoped the team would build momentum with last week's arrests and that continuing investigations will help curb narcotic distribution around the state.

"We're still taking baby steps and feeling our way through it right now," he said.
